My late cat Hendrix was bit in the hind leg by some animal, so the vet said he had to stay inside for at least a month while his vaccines and medication were doing their work. He loved being outside, so it was almost impossible to open a door without him flying outside. We ended up getting a leash, and walked him around the yard for that month. It is doable, but they definitely want to lead and have more freedom.

I have for 30 yrs now walked all my cats on a leash. The only one who rejected it was a 19 yr old cat that was already set in her ways. The difference between walking a cat and dog is that the cat wants to lead you and stop along the way smelling various plants etc.
Enjoy the journey and make sure you get a leash that goes around their frame rather than neck. It gives you more control and is less dangerous to the cats neck.
My cats look forward to their evening walk especially.
